MATHEMATICS TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS

Technology is the backbone of our teaching philosophy.  In an age of iPods, Wiis, Second Life, and countless other technological diversions, it only make sense that engaging our students requires the use of technology tools.  But in order to be effective these tools must be easy to use, cost effective (i.e. free) and appropriate.  With this in mind, here are some of the educational technology resources that we have found to be effective for classroom teachers.

  • Podcasting: online audio or video files that can be downloaded to an iPod (or other mp3 players) for playback by students or parents.  Podcasts are easy to create and the software tools necessary to create them are free!
Sample Podcast - Merritt Island High Algebra Students
  • Web Design: an effective teacher website can provide a wealth of information for students and also an invaluable means of communication to parents.  Click here to see an example of a DCE-created teacher website.
  • PowerPoint: PowerPoint presentations can be used in virtually all subject areas and grade levels.  But creating interesting, innovative PowerPoints without a lot of tedious bulleted lists is more of a challenge...but we can show you how to do it.
  • Microsoft Photo Story 3: Photo Story 3 is an amazing, free tool that can be used in many classroom situations, particularly in the creation of student projects.  Photo Story can be combined with PowerPoint slides to make some truly awesome projects and lessons.
Check out our Video Lessons Page for some examples.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel: these Office Suite products are available to most teachers, but using them effectively in the classroom is challenging for many educators.  We can show you examples and ideas for some amazing documents and student projects using Word and Excel.
Sample Excel Project - Creating an Amortization Table.
  • Jing Project : free software available for screen captures and video captures.
  • Google Earth: not just a tool for Social Studies, GE can be used very effectively in the Math Classroom.  Check out The Amazing Math Race!

New - Animoto!  Free web-based tool for creating amazingly cool videos!
